Without being too personal, the outcome of your case could depend on your personal reasons. You need to intend to work for your employer at least at the time of I-140 filing and upon entry to the U.S. when you return. If you file an I-485, you could switch employers after more than 180 days, but on filing that, you probably also need that intention as well.

Even with your active H1b visa you cannot stay too long outside the USA unless you can show that it is work related. You need proper documentation from the employer.
