There is a good chance you can get the charge reduced to a "following too close", but of course each situation is different. "Following too close" is only an infraction and not a misdemeanor, so that would be much better if you could work that out. You might be able to talk to the prosecutor before the hearing, but it is much more likely that you will need to discuss it with them at the hearing.
