Legal Question in Business Law in Illinois

employment and benefits

I gave my 2 week notice on 122908, my employer opted to terminate my empoyment on the day my notice was given. They are also saying my health insurance is terminated as of the same day my notice was given. Is this legal? Is my insurance still good till the end of the year? I have already had to pay for my part of the heatlh insurance through my payroll check. Can I get unemployment now or not?

Re: employment and benefits

Absent a contract, they can terminate you at anytime. You would have to look at the insurance policy to determine whether it is also terminated immediately. You should be able obtain unemployment since you were terminated if you otherwise qualify.
