Legal Question in Business Law in Illinois

one all encompassing LLC or two needed?

My husband is a mechanic, I a stay at home wife who does crafts. He wants to open his own garage and I want to sell my crafts. The question is can we open an all encompassing retail/services LLC with his services and parts retail and my products retail, or because the items are so different would we both need our own business? Does this situation fall under a ''general store'' type business with services as well? Thank you for your time.

Re: one all encompassing LLC or two needed?

You can certainly handle the two businesses in a single LLC. Of course, if you do that, the assets of both businesses will be subject to the creditors of both businesses. You need to weigh the benefits of separating the two businesses against the cost of organizing and maintaining two LLCs.

Of course, particularly in a small business, the promise of limited liability is not absolute. See "How Limited is Limited Liability?" at http://www.limitedliabilitycompanycenter.com/how_limited_is_limited_liability.html
