Legal Question in Business Law in Illinois

Wrongful Layoff

I was recently laid off. The reason given me was that the staff was too small for 2 supervisors, after it was made known that someone was being promoted to Operations Manager and would now be 1 position higher than myself. I have recently found out that 2 new call center agents were hired and a temporary person was brought in to take care of some of the jobs that I performed.

Do I have any legal action against my former employer for not offering me a less position.

Re: Wrongful Layoff

If employment is "at-will" - as most employment is - the employer can fire the employee at any time, for any reason, or no reason at all (and the employee can likewise quit at any time, for any reason). For a layman's definition, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_will_employment

If there was an employment contract, or the layoff was motivated by race/gender/age/diability/etc discrimination, the cirumstances would be different.
