Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Illinois

Libel/Slander

Our son was employed as a professional musician in a theatre. The music director has been there many years & usually hire the musician. The new director coming in hired our son and she was very upset. He played the run of the show. She was very cold and remote during that time. Over a year later, he was scheduled to do a show in another suburbian theater & when it came down to offering a contract, the music director said that the other director had talked to him about our son & indicated that he was not a good performer & they were not willing to take a chance on him. I do understand that there are politics in everything, but he did just finish a very successful show in on of the cities well respected theatres. Does our son have any rights regarding slander or is it best to let things go & hope that he is able to overcome woman's vendetta.

Re: Libel/Slander

Good morning. In my opinion, your son should consider filing a suit for slander. According to your posting, the statements made resulted in your son being unable to secure a spot with the new director. Should your son decide to file a lawsuit, it will come donwn to the amount of damages he has sustained as a result of the statements made. There is a possibility that this lady is still slandering your son and he may want to investigate further and determine whether this lady posted anything derogatory about him on the internet. Will be happy to discuss this further and in more detail. If he decides to file a lawsuit, it needs to be filed within 1 year of the slander, otherwise he will be barred from bringing a lawsuit by the applicable statute of limitations in the State of Illinois.
