Can a small business (for-profit) legally use an academic version of a computer program?

Generally speaking, the answer is no. If you are getting an academic version of a program under false pretenses, then you could be violating the terms of the academic license or the infringing the software copyright.

There are exceptions if the program is "mixed use," but even in that case you are not always free and clear. Feel free to give us a call if you want to talk.
