what are my rights as a consumer who is working with a collection agency

Hello. In my opinion it helps to be represented by an attorney when working with such companies. You have a right not to be harrassed and you have a right not to disclose information over the phone to a collection agency. Of course if there is a judgment against you, the creditor can bring you into court on a citation to recover and discover assets but this is another matter. However, having an attorney negotiate on your behalf will certainly relieve you of some of the stress associated with this situation. Will be happy to discuss this further and in more detail.
