Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

For the 5 years we were together, my ex "borrowed" upwards of 18000 from me. I was paying all his bills, food, clothes, parking tickets, etc. When he stole my credit card, I was done. Decided not to press charges when he verbally agreed to reimburse me for that and everything else, and I'm sure I can also find some emails/texts confirming his agreement. But now he's refusing. I'm pretty deep into debt because of him. I also have bank/credit card statements going back a few years. I can pinpoint on them what was for him, for the most part.Think I'd have any luck in a lawsuit?

The first question is if you were successful, does he have anything to take to satisfy any judgment you might get. If he your ex friend or spouse. If it is spouse, the issue should have been raised in the divorce. If friend, then you have a heavy burden of proof to overcome the initial presumption of gift.
