Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Credit card debt of deceased mother

My sisters and I are wondering if we are responsible for our deceased mothers credit card debt. Jan 5 of 2004 will be exactly 2years ago that she passed away. Her credit card debt is about $9,000. The credit card companies are aware that she passed away. We are planning to close on the sale of her house in Illinois, which is the state all 3 of us also live in.

Her house closing is supposed to be this coming Thursday,Nov 20. We havent been given a clear, staight forward answer by the lawyer we hired for her house. We also tried asking a couple of other lawyers who didnt give straight answers either. We dont know what to do. None of us had our names on the credit cards and she was the only owner of her house.

Re: Credit card debt of deceased mother

Sounds like you need new lawyers! The estate is responsible for the debt.
