Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Deceased Spouses medical bills

if your husband dies with exsisting medical bills and credit card bills is the spouse responsible? Someone told me if you send a copy of death certificate and a letter stating ''left no estate'' that would clear spouse of all responsiblilty. Is this legal and if not how can I get out from having to pay these bills? The only estate that was left to her is a 401 from work. Thankyou.

There is alot more to this. First, are the credit cards in the wifes name also? Did she every use the credit cards? As for the medical bills did she ever sign anything saying she would be responsible for payment.

Was an estate opened when the husband died. Simply sending a letter to the creditors saying there were no assets is not going to work because how does the creditor know that is the truth?
