Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Fees collects from a collection agency for bad checks

I had 3 checks that we returned to a store in 2004 & turned over to a collection agency in September 2005. I received a notice from a collection agency stating the settlement amount of the debt. The amount given to me was for the amount of each check PLUS an additional $120 for EACH check. I paid it immediately because it threatened legal action, but now I am not sure if I should have paid the extra $360 in what I assume are their fees. It did not say what the extra money was for anywhere in the notice. Also, the collection agency claims to be a law firm in Orangeburg, NY. I could not find a listing for this law firm anywhere. If they are legit, wouldn't they be listed on the internet somewhere?

Sounds like there could be a Fair Debt Collection Practices Act violation. Take a look at http://www.thomasmoens.com/fair_debt_collection_practices.htm

I would be happy to review the letter as well.
