Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

I have a student loan in default. In December, they told me I had to pay in full. This loan was not to the 270 days past due until February. Now after the loan is in default she tells me that I could have paid $3000 and then the monthly payments, but now it is too late and she refuses to work with us. I called in December to work out payments and she refused to work with me. Told me the roof over my daughters head shouldnt come before paying her. I was not working for the entire time repayment started. It started in June and I was out of work from July to November.
