Can i be sued over an unpaid medical bill

i had surgery done about 2 years ago. i thought that the amount i paid my doctor would be my only bill, but about a month after surgery a got a bill from a Anethesiologist for $560.00. now a recieve a letter from a law office saying i will be sued if i don't contact them. a friend had told me that i can't be sued over a medical bill is this true?
