how long can you get for going in a tax place to get someone else check that doesn't have your name on it... police it was a police sting?

The possible sentence depends upon what charges are filed. The charges could be identity theft, forgery, fraud, or theft by deception. All are felonies and of different classes. There are potential misdemeanor charges as well. For information about felonies a sentences see:

It's difficult to answer without knowing more. However, the State usually charges everything they can under the facts alleged. There will no doubt be multiple charges.
