Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Just notified of outstanding warrant from 1987

I was recently notified that I am a ''Fugitive Felon'' in the state of Illinois from an incident that occured in 1987 during a visit to Illinois. The charge is 3rd degree felony battery. My question is: Why did it take 17 years to locate me? Is there a statute of limitations on this type of charge? What are my chances of being convicted & sent to jail for an incident so old? I just require legal assistance or advice so this matter can be resolved. Mahalo.

In many states the law is that any applicable statute of limitations on the prosecution of a crime is tolled (stopped) from running if the defendant has removed himself from the state. Perhaps it just took a long time for the authorities to find you, or perhaps someone has gone to the authorities recently and applied renewed pressure, or new information . In any event you must hire an attorney if you are able to do so, and if not get a public defender to represent you as soon as you can. If this case is in the central to southern part of the state I may be able to offer my services. You may call me at 314-727-2822.
