Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

possession of less than 10 grams of cannabis

I was arrested last night for possession of less than 10 grams of cannabis and a pipe used to inhale cannabis. The cop told me it did not ask to search, he said he smelled cannabis and just searched me. He said he gave me a city ordinance and would not go on my record. I also received a speeding ticket for going 17 over the speed limit. I was arrested in Illinois lake county. It is the first time I was arrested. Do you know what the charges would be? I do not have money to afford a lawyer, should i request a public defender?

In order to have a public defender represent you, you must be found to be indigent. This can be difficult to show. You have to be truly impoverished. If you are say, a college student just strapped for cash, this can be especially difficult. Getting arrested for marijuana is a criminal charge and unless you are able to get the charge dismissed, taken under advisement, or given some other kind of plea, it will go on your record. Because this is your first criminal charge, I can probably get you a deal to keep it off of your record. I notice you are in Waukegan. If you would like to call my office, maybe we can work out a fee you can afford if you just want to plea this thing out.
