Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

working with police with drug case

my 19 year old son's apartment was recently raided with a search warrant for drugs. nothing was found except for 2 mariquana pipes. there were 5 roommates there when this occured. because my son was up front and told the police where the pipes were, they are now trying to get him to set up a mariquana sale to bust another a kid. my son is afraid to do this because of retaliation. what are our options with this? do you think he should participate with this? no drugs were found in the apartment and they were staking out the place for a month. my son and his roommates do smoke pot occasionally, but do no other drugs. the police basically blew this raid and now want someting to show for it. legally can they hold the pipes over my son to make him snitch on someone else? my son is soon to be moving out of this apartment and moving in with me. i don't know what the police can legally do in this situation. we are meeting with them this sunday and when my son said he wanted me to be at the meeting, the policeman involved wanted to know if i was a lawyer! this makes me supicious. also, the police involved are university of illinois police not city. thank-you

Re: working with police with drug case

Since your son is over 17 years old, only a lawyer can represent him. You may not even be allowed into the meeting on Sunday. Get a lawyer. An experienced criminal defense lawyer. Explain all of the circumstances to him and heed his counsel. Your son is facing a Class A misdemeanor, 2 counts. The penalty is up to 364 days in the county jail for each count he is found guilty of. In addition there may by a fine of up to $2,500.00, per count. That is the worst case scenerio. Hire a lawyer fast.
