What is the purpose for a law such as STAND YOUR GROUND. whether if Be in Florida

or any of the 20 states that give their residents to act in a police capacity.

and what would be the purpose of hiring police if residents are able to take the law into their own hands ? I'm from Illinois and I never heard of such a disturbing practice in THE USA/

Actually the principles upon which these laws supposedly are based go WAY back and had its place in time, and still does to a certain extent when you think about home invasion. But beyond that I tend to agree these laws can potentially be abused. There's a decent article on it at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stand-your-ground_law

but it's good to see you're thinking about it. And if it's disturbing enough maybe you'll want to help do something to prevent more of them being passed without more narrow application.
