Legal Question in Entertainment Law in Illinois

Can I release a song with lyrics that contain the name of a business?

Dear legal expert-

Can I mention 'Wired Magazine' and the

word 'Robodyssey' which happens to be a

company in the U.S. in a song I'm releasing

on the internet? We're hoping a lot of

people will see the music video, and I don't

want to get sued.

Thanks,

Corbett

Hello. In my most conservative opinion, I would get written permission from the magazine and company before releasing your sing which makes mention of both. If you do not, you could be facing a lawsuit depending on the lyrics of your song as they pertain to each. This is a tricky situation and it is better to be over cautious than risk a real problem. I will be happy to discuss this with you further.
