Re: debt

Hello. Essentially both husband and

wife are responsible for any and all

debt incurred during the marriage. If

your wife is not working and you have

been married say 15 years or more, it is possible that a court would order you to pay maintenance to your wife. This used to be called alimony. The payment of maintenance would include payment of all debts. Getting a divorce is complicated when it comes to dividing property and apportioning the responsibility for debt. Further, it depends upon how much debt your wife has. If she is working then it is possible that the court will order your wife to assume full respon-sibility for this particular debt that she incurred. So much of this decision making by the court is within the "discretion" of the judge. I will be happy to discuss

this with you further.
