If you look at your papers, you probably signed a retainer agreement that provides that your lawyer charges you by the hour for the work he/she is performing for you. If the time that was spent was really spent, you owe the money. Divorces are not free. Litigating costs money. If you or your spouse is fighting it costs money. If you do not want to pay, then fire the lawyer, represent yourself and remember - the person who represents themself has a fool for a lawyer.
