Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

we have lived in my father in laws house for over 18 years. he purchased the farm and didn't want the house. he was going to let it fall in a pile. we have done all the work and paid for all the renovations. this includes dry wall, windows, siding, new furnace, water heater, pressure tank, ect. a year and a half ago he remarried. now his new wife thinks we need to pay rent. of course we didn't save a lot of the receipts for the work that was done. why would we? he's our dad for god sake.

they also say we need to pay back rent for the last 2 1/2 yrs. and may I add....this is a farm, we have also painted and repaired the 2 barns, replaced fence, and have made updates to the other outside buildings.

do we have any legal right to this house? help!!

They cannot get back rent but you are not entitled to an ownership interest because you did all that work. That may be considered in lieu of rent. Butthey can demand future rent or you will have to move out eventually.
