Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Can a parent voluntarily give temporary guardianship to relative?

Can a parent voluntarily give temporary guardianship to a relative? The parent wants me to care for the children but doesn't want to go thru the courts. Is it possible to sign letter so I can care for them till there's a stable home for her and the children? There is no father for 1st child and the father of 2nd child will sign also if it's possible.
