Can I petition the court for contribution to college by paying a portion of my sons student loans seeing that now my ex has a full time job when prior he was always unemployed or under employed. My son has now graduated and has $55,000 in student loans because his dad did not pay towards college

Frankly, I doubt it. The issue was his ability at the time the obligation arose, which from what you say was none. In addition you are not entitled to retroactive relief, which he would argue you are seeking.
