Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois
My daughter who is 15 got caught shoplifting. I received a call from a lawyers office in Florida, mind you I am in Illinois, stating the some kind of civil action was being charge to me for what she did in the amount of $700.00. Is there something that can be done about this. I already paid a fine to the court for her stupied actions.

There is a civil penalty related to the retail theft in which the store can charge you and your daughter for costs including monetary penalty, attorney fees, and store costs for the time spent related to the retail theft.
That being said, that $700 fee is high compared to what my clients have had to pay in the past. That $700 fee can be negotiated down or negotiated to be paid in installments. I am familiar with the law firm that has sent you the letter and have dealt with them in the past.
Feel free to call if you'd like to discuss this matter in greater detail.
