My fiance unexpectedly broke our engagement by text message. Can I keep the ring?

In Illinois, unless there is an agreement to the contrary, an engagement ring is what is known as a "conditional gift" given in contemplation of marriage. If the marriage did not take place, the condition for the gift was not fulfilled (regardless of why) the ring goes back to the person who gave it. If there was a Mink Coat given as a gift during that time, the Mink stays :)
