Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

Harassing neighbors

We have neighbors on one side of our house that we had a disagreement with. They had said we could use their property to remove a tree that was on our property and then they changed their minds and called the cops the day the tree came down. The cops said we could go ahead. Now that the weather is nice we are outside a lot and they are making comments to other neighbors and their friends that are visiting about us. We have heard them since our backyards are right next to each other. We have small children and we don't want them exposed to this. They are making comments to the effect that we are not to be trusted and that we are liars and have no respect for their property! We want to know if there is anything we can do legally to get them to just stop talking about us? We would like this to just go away but they seem to want to drag it out even more! Can you get a restraining order for someone to discontinue talking to you or about you? Please help.

Re: Harassing neighbors

I believe you can resolve your disagreement without resorting to the legal system. However, you may have a cause of action sounding in the tort of defamation. I would need more facts to let you know how strong your case would be.
