Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

When I was in school, I started a painting company to help me get by in my last year. It was fairly successful, so I registered it as an LLC. That fall, I got a job offer that fall and decided to take it while my cousin handled the company's operations. I noticed that the company wasn't profitable, so I decided to not participate in its operations and dissolve the LLC. My company was dissolved August of 2008.

My cousin continued to do work on behalf of the company on a job to job basis, and had a dispute with one of his employees about getting paid on a particular job in October of 2009. He never acknoledged any of the court paperwork, and yesterday I got a letter from the Attorney General saying that they found me liable of these damages since the company was in my name.

Now they are demanding more than 7k from me, and there is no way I can come up with that type of money unless I start selling off my organs.

I would appreciate if anyone can explain my options.

If you formally dissolved the LLC in 2008, had nothing to do with the company after 2008 and

this happened in 2009, I do not understand how he company was in your name. Please post with additional details or see an attorney in person-be sure to bring all of your paperwork.

My guess is that when the former employee filed a wage claim, the department found your information. Is the court paperwork from the attorney general the first correspondence you received from an Illinois agency? You do need to consult with an attorney.
