Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

When my sister died my brother and I were her closest relatives, a month later my brother passed away. His son had a quit claim deed to my sisters house and it said James Bann and Violet Sterling, does that mean I have any claim to the house? Also he got her life insurance and changed the locks and told me if I wanted any thing out of the house I had to come up with 6,000 dollars, 1/2 the funeral. Can he do that. I am 74 and can't afford a lawyer and don't know what is right.

There are too many possibilities to give you an answer. You will need to have an attorney review the relevant documents to give you any opinion as to the ownership of the house.

Contact a local attorney. You may be able to obtain a free consultation. However, at some point you will need a retainer. Although, if the house is going to be half yours, an attorney may be willing to work something out with you. Yo ucan also try Land of Lincoln Legal Aid http://www.lollaf.org/office.html
