Legal Question in Insurance Law in Illinois

life insurance

My wife worked for a large hospital corporation. While employed, she got cancer and was treated by the same hospital and their hospice service. Her health declined over several months during which time she was bedridden, disabled and heavily medicated. Her employee handbook lists life insurance as one of the employee benefits. Following her death, I asked the her employer to pay the life insurance. They refused. If I understand their reasoning, they say my wife was terminated from employment before she died. She worked for a time after the diagnosis and was listed as an employee for some time after that. Any mail or other notices she might have received regarding her status would have been during a time when she could not possibly have responded. Any ideas???
