Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Illinois

My cable company sent me an email telling me that unauthorized copyright material was downloaded on my computer. The company is offering me a settlement pay to them for the movies ,$125.00 for 3 movies, or go to court. What's my defense? I didn't know about this download, but I'm quite sure it was my disabled daughter that did it. I don't have the money.

First verify if this is really your cable company or is a pfishing site or other scam. Then read your cable terms and conditions. Third, have the cable company come out to verify your connection is not being hacked into. Fourth, check to see that your computer hasn't been hacked into, because especially if you have VOIP, there are hackers who learn your computer and router and learn your ordering ip addresses, and eventually can order things on line virtually through your computer or VOIP to theirs. Finally, if something was downloadable this should not be an issue and regular download charges should apply (that's why it sounds like pfishing). Using your daughter's disability sounds both inappropriate and simply questionable.
