Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

Dept of Employment Security in IL penalty

What can happen to me if I was found to knowingly making false statements about earnings to unemploymentin IL?

I got a letter notifying me that an agent would be calling me from IL dept. of employment securities for an interview determining if I knowingly made false statements to recieve benefits and claiming I was overpaid $1800.Ok,I was working part time.Every two weeks I would call into the unemployment phone system to report what I earned for that period. They would pay me according to what I reported. The more I earned, the smaller I recieved. They're saying I actually earned more, according to the employer and what I claimed on last years taxes and I lied to recieve a larger unemployment check.I don't know why,I didn't lie,and am scared they're gonna slap a huge fine on me or worse.I don't have any of those clock out slips and don't know what to say

Re: Dept of Employment Security in IL penalty

You could be charged with theft and benefits fraud. I suggest that you discuss your situation with an experinced criminal defense lawyer, before you make any statements.
