Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

I was employed by a cpa firm who did not pay me my salary on a regular basis. I eventually quit after realizing that the employer had no desire to pay me on a regular basis even though I was working above and beyond the call of duty. I would get sporadic checks and promises for payment, but there was never a catchup period, but instead, more responsibility on my plate. We had a verbal agreement. Nothing in writing. for the checks I received, no taxes were ever withheld. He would promise me that he was going to send my information to the payroll processing company, but it never happened. After I finally resigned after making two earlier attempt, the owner told me to give him a bill of what he owes. I sent him a bill recently and have not received any responses or acknowledgement from him. On top of that I never received any w-2 for prior year income. This has taken a toll on me. I am close to losing my apartment among other things,, including my marriage. What recourse do I have? I am desperate for money and cannot afford to pay a high legal fee.
