Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

Employer wants my personal computer

I work from home using my personal computer. My employer was bought out by a company from another state. I have been working for the new company almost three months. The business is being moved to the other state so everyone will be let go in the next few days. The new company just gave me a ''heads up'' that they will be wanting to do something about my personal computer for security reasons, even though information has been deleted. They are not sure what they want to do about it, either ''wipe'' it or ''buy'' it from me or something else. They wanted to know what kind of personal information I had on it and advised I may want to ''back it up.''

This is my computer. I bought it with my money. It does not belong to nor ever has belonged to the company. Do I have a say in this? I do not want them taking my computer for a while and ''wiping'' it. And if I allow them to ''buy'' it from me, can I choose the dollar amount?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Re: Employer wants my personal computer

Hello. Your new employer has no right to your

computer. Its your's. I would not let them

touch my computer. As such, you are an indepen-

dent contractor. Your tools are your tools. I

would not have any further discussions with the

new company about this. Will be happy to answer

any additional questions you may have.
