Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

In Federal Court, in an employment lawsuit involving an overseas employer for wrongful dismissal, owing salary, defamatory reference, I am being forced by court order to give the defense attorneys my Social Security number.

I have no idea how the defense intends to use my Social Security number.

Are such rulings allowed ?

Rule 5 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure mandates that your SS number not become public record. As for the court order, I can't comment without seeing its specific language, but you may move for a protective order.

As a general rule, SS numbers can be disclosed, although not disclosed in public filings. SS numbers are just easier to deal with -- imagine trying to keep "John Smith" straight with all of these files.

You shouldn't be doing all of this pro se. Federal court is not for the weak of heart or non-attorney. Consider retaining an attorney. If your case is good, someone may take it on contingency.
