Are companies required to pay overtime wages when you work more than 40 hours a week?

It is a common misconception that a salaried employee is not entitled to overtime pay. However, the true factor is whether the employee is "exempt" from overtime pay under the statute. Generally speaking, professionals and managers are "exempt," although simply calling an employee a manager is not enough to render him or her an exempt employee. This is a complicated issue, and one that cannot be answered by a simple "yes" or "no."
