Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

Retaliation after reporting company policy violation. One of my co-workers brings his friends who do not work for the company to "help him out" during his shift. The friends are allowed to operate heavy machinery and carry dangerous tools that we often use. After about four months and turning around to find myself surrounded by the friends I told my assistant managers that I felt unsafe with the friends there. I was told they allow him to bring his friends because they help get things done faster. Last week I finally told the head manager who then talked to the assistant managers. Yesterday the co-worker I reported was talking to another employee loud enough for me to hear saying a manager (who he called by name) told him what I did and that I was snitching" and I was going to get what was coming to me. Can an employer tell who reported them? What can I do because I really don't want this to get any dirtier then it is.

Hello. Your employer used very poor judgment in my opinion. The conversation that you overheard sounds like a threat. You may want to make a police report and let the manager know that you could be physically at risk. If you have a union, you also should contact your union representative immediately. Will be happy to discuss this further and in more detail.
