Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

I was told at 2:00 pm Friday 5/20/11 my position of FT 'Accountant' with a municipality was being eliminated and replaced with PT 'Accounting Specialist' (25 hrs weekly) - pay cut and no pto. The job description is basically the same. I believe their true intent is to eliminate me. What are my rights?

If you are an employee at will, your employment can be terminated at any time with or without cause and with or without notice. However, there are exceptions to this rule. The termination could be unlawful if it violates one of the anti-discrimination laws or violates an employment contract. The fact that you work for a public employer likely means you have more rights that most employees might have, whether you have a contract or not. We are happy to discuss your situation if you woul dlike to contact us.
