Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

How do I evict someone that has been staying at my apartment?

I live in Arlington Heights, IL.

I let someone stay with me and things have gone steadily downhill. I would like her to leave my apartment, but she will not do so willingly. She is not on the lease, I let her stay with me. I do not have the money or the time it would take to go through the complete Sheriffs department proceedings. What are my other options?

In general, a person who is staying in an apartment, who is not on the lease, must leave when the landlord or the person who is on the lease demands that she leave. She is a squatter. Contact the Arlington Heights police community relations for help. A sheriff or police office may not be willing to help without a court order or without evidence of physical harm.

She may be willing to leave if she receives an attorney letter demanding that she leave. Would you be willing to go that route?

This answer is in response to a general legal qauestion, and does not in itself create an attorney client privilege or relationship.
