Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Good Morning,

My child's father and I are living together. While I was at work he went to the rental office with a notarized letter stating that I no longer live there and I moved all of my things out. He is listed as the head of the house and I as the co-head. They then had the locks changed. We have been living together for the past three years. The rental office states that I have no option but to take him to court. Please let me know what rights I do have.

Hello. The rental office had no right to change the locks. In my opinion you can file a lawsuit for unlawful eviction. The fact that the rental office may have relied upon the representations made to it by your child's father will not be a valid defense. Clearly it is attempting to avoid legal responsibility by claiming that you will have to take your child's father to court. I suggests that you take immediate action. Will be happy to discuss this further and in more detail.
