Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Hi,

I signed a lease for an apartment with roommates, but moved out after and they lived there for 7 more months and eventually got evicted. Since my name was on the lease I was called and told that I need to pay up a 12000 bill they had racked up and it would effect my credit as well. Is there anything I can do to get out of it? Maybe going to court to be removed from the lawsuit if I can prove that I was out of the house and promised to be taken off the lease by the old roommates?

You will need to defend the lawsuit and countersue your former roommates. If you were on the lease you are just as liable as they are but considering the facts should be entitled to significant contribution from them to offset the damages. You MAY be able to be dismissed dependent upon OTHER facts not stated in your question, IF those facts exist, but you will have to talk to an attorney about the whole thing.
