Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Illinois

An automotive repair shop determined that the quality of gasoline in my car was causing engine trouble. They provided a large sample of the gasoline from my car in an unapproved container (Powerade bottle filled to the top approx. 32 oz.) and let me leave their facility with it. Is this legal? My son saw this bottle on the shelf in my garage and made me realize the dangers about having this and why this not allowed in the state of Illinois.
