Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Illinois

Police department background investigation for police hiring.

A police dept. did a police hiring background investigation on me and decided to come to my current employer for questions without my authorization. I have been working at my current job for 10 years. The police then rejected me and now I'm in jepordy of losing my job. Can they be liable.

Re: Police department background investigation for police hiring.

Your question is a little vague. From what I surmise, you applied to become a police officer. As part of the department's investigation, officers spoke w/your current employer. The police department did not hire you, and your current employer is upset that you were seeking to leave. This is the factual situation I surmise from your question.

If my assumptions are correct, this leads to a question: Did you give authorization for the police department to conduct its investigation? If so, I think there is little that can be done, as long as they reasonably complied with their obligations thereunder. Of course, without reading any such request and authorization, it is impossible to do anything more than speculate.
