I would say that one of your responsibilities was to have professional liability insurance in place at any time you ever practiced medicine. Having failed in that resposibility, you now have a responsibility to either pay off the injured parties or defend the claim.

Your options would include representing yourself which would just add another serious mistake to an ongoing series of mistakes,or, you could hire an attorney to represent you. If you do neither, then I am going to predict that the plaintiff(s) will win the lawsuit and will find a way to collect their judgment or hound you for life in an attempt to do so.

Your options are to find another attorney and find a way to pay him or her; or declare bankruptcy, if you are in a position to do so.

FYI, there is a principle in the law that a judgment against you from Illinois can be enforced in PA.

You need to consult with an Illinois med mal defense attorney ASAP.

If you don't know where to start, look on this list and/or the Bar Association referral service in Illinois preferably the county where you were sued.

An additional resource for you might be the Illinois State Medical Society, as they probably have members who are similarly situated.
