Legal Question in Personal Injury in Illinois

My son's friend let him drive his mother's SUV after school yesterday just around the block. Unfortunately my son panicked for some reason or another and crashed the SUV into and apartment building. My son's friend does have his license but my son only has a permit. My son received 4 tickets and suffered a broken wrist and other minor bruise, the friend suffered minor injuries from the air bag and a ticket and his drivers license was taken. Both boys have traffic court in November. Both boys are also 18 and seniors in H.S. My question is what should I expect now? Will the owner of the SUV & the building file law suits against both boys, me & my son, just my son? Are both boys liable? Although I can't afford an attorney, should I be prepared to seek one? I'm really terrified of this situation so any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

It is likely that the owner of the apartment building will seek reimbursement for the damage from you, the SUV owner, and the two boys. If there is insurance involved (the SUVs) they will provide a defense to the SUV owner free of charge. You should also be able to have your own vehicle insurance come and defend you-generally car insurances are good for vehicle related damages- Read your policy or talk to your agent about that.

If there is no insurance, then you may need to seek an attorney to provide you and your boy with a proper defense.

Good luck-

the SUV owner is not likely to sue you since her son provided the vehicle. The apartment owner will certainly make claim. Chances are that the SUV insurance carrier will provide coverage that may even extend to your son. You should check your own policy also.

Additionally, there is probably coverage under one or the other of the policies for your sons medical expenses.
