i am allowed to protest in front of a building as long as i am not on their property?

Chicago has a public ordinance that creates a "protest" bubble. How far away you have to be from a building depends on the type of building you are seeking to protest outside of. For more information, please take a look at the Municipal Code of Chicago, section 8-4-010 Disorderly conduct.

As demonstrated by the Supreme Court hearing the case of Snyder v. Westboro Baptist Church, there is no way to give you a "yes or no" answer based on the limited facts you provide.
