Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

House Taxes

I bought a home and I recieved a letter stateing that the back taxes hadnt been paid. The people we bought the home from want use to pay the taxes and they will subtract that from what we own on our home, but I was told that if we file certain papers and paid the back taxes we could own the home free and clear. Is that true and what would I have to do?

Re: House Taxes

That is not exactly true. If the back taxes aren't paid, the house can be sold at a tax sale for the price of the taxes give or take some additional fees. However, the owner then has the right to pay off those taxes plus interest. If they dont within a certain time, then you would receive a deed to the house. You should talk with an attorney in more detail about the process as my decription is general.
