Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

Property Tax relief

A co worker can't meet her property tax bill. She is considering selling her home. Her husband is legally disabled. I thought there was a way to deed the house to the state now for property tax relief and the state gets the house when both parties die.

Re: Property Tax relief

The County Treasurer's Office and the Illinois Department of Revenue offer a program called the Senior Citizens Tax Deferral Program. It allows qualifying seniors to defer part or all of the property taxes until the sale of the home. I do not know of another Tax Deferral program other than that one.

There is also a Disabled Veterans Exemption if the husband's disability is related to his service to one of the U.S. Armed Services.
