Legal Question in Tax Law in Illinois

I had filed Chapter 7. It was discharged in December. I had my old tax bills on it. My lawyer told me that it once it was discharged I would not have to pay the back bills. I do not have any property I recently came home and the IRS sent me certified letters.

Generally, any taxes that were assessed within 3 years of the date of the bankruptcy should be discharged, even if they were not listed in the bankruptcy documents. However, if the IRS was not given notice, they may not be aware that some or all of your taxes were dischargable. You should note that taxes assessed less than 3 years years prior to the date of bankruptcy, or some penalties, can not be discharged and may still be collectible.
